(Re-)Framing the Arab/Muslim (open access)

9/11 changed the world forever. And it made visible what had been boiling underneath the surface of intercultural pluralism in the U.S. for more than a century: Arab Americans play a special role in the discourse on race, class, and gender. This becomes particularly visible when looking at the multitude of media depictions of Arab American characters in literary and media outlets. This book (dissertation) is an interdisciplinary cross-over between American and Media Studies. Based on the theory of framing, it explores the complex relationship between public media depictions and personal identity conflict and negotiation of Arab American protagonists in life writing.
